Why The Okavango Delta in Botswana should be on your bucket list

I have absolutely loved everywhere I have visited on the African continent - South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe Victoria Falls and Botswana. I can’t wait to go back and see more of this spectacular continent.

I’ve managed to narrow down my absolute favourites to Botswana and the Okavango Delta. Full of spectacular scenery, abundance of wildlife, great lodges and not too many crowds. You’re in the middle of nowhere with wild animals surrounding you, but you feel totally safe. We stayed at two different lodges while in the Delta - Baines Camp and Chiefs. Both are 5 star, but both are completely different. Baines is on the edge on one of the Delta’s waterholes, so hippos galore. They offer special experiences where they will pull your bed out onto the deck and you can sleep under the stars… I wasn’t that adventurous, but I did take a bubble bath under the stars. The camp is raised off the ground and at night the hippos come out of the water and feed on grass under your cabin. A truly unique experience! Chief’s Camp is in a drier part of the Delta, but just as busy with animals and beautiful scenery. When we went to lunch, we were visited by some elephants at the restaurant, but they couldn’t stay, no reservation, lol.

I’m definitely not a morning person at the best of times, but this trip and my itinerary was perfect. Up early for a morning safari , bush coffee and cake to watch the sun rise, back to the lodge for relaxation during the heat of the day, then late afternoon, out again on a game drive, gazing at the sunset, listening to animals, while sipping your favourite sundowner drink, then back to the lodge for dinner and sitting by the campfire. Repeat the next day and the next and so forth.

This is great for couples, friends, and families (all kids ages are welcome but maybe 10years and above is better suited). The Okavango Delta is a once in a lifetime destination that everyone should try to experience , no matter what their budget, as everyone can have a fantastic time. And for those who have been there before, you are guaranteed to see something new every time.

Don’t rush Africa - take your time to experience and enjoy your surroundings.
